Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal social stratification and describe the social problems that arise as a result of the social class stratification contained in the short story "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe. The method used in this research is descriptive method. The technique used in this research is data collection in the form of content in the short story "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe. By exploring the aspect of social class stratification, we can understand more about the conflict between the two characters in this story, and why Montresor chooses to take revenge in a planned and cruel way. Edgar Allan Poe's The Cask of Amontillado can be attributed to social class stratification that illustrates the power dynamics and the main motive behind the revenge between Montresor and Fortunato. The problem that arises due to the existence of a measure of social stratification is that the upper social classes act arbitrarily towards other social classes.
