Abstract

Reading comprehension is vital for academic success, especially in high school, where students face increasingly complex texts. This literature review explores various strategies to enhance reading comprehension among high school students, focusing on metacognitive and cognitive approaches. Strategies identified include planning, monitoring, determining importance, questioning, making inferences, making connections, synthesizing, and visualizing. The review synthesizes findings from five studies examining these strategies and their impact on reading proficiency. Ozek's research highlights varied strategy use at different reading stages, with significant differences based on student characteristics. Khamkhong's intervention showed improved reading skills through targeted instruction. Fadli and Ahmad demonstrated that integrating video games like "Age of Empires II" can enhance comprehension. Yoani and Mutiara found a positive link between cognitive strategies and English proficiency test scores. However, Hong Li's study showed limited effectiveness of strategy instruction, suggesting the need for context-specific adjustments. Overall, effective reading strategies, including cognitive, metacognitive, and innovative methods, can significantly improve reading comprehension, though their success depends on individual and contextual factors.
